Time was when value packs for SMS were a rage, and in most cases – a necessity. From monthly, unlimited packs to 0.1p per SMS, these bonus cards were a boon to many. So much so that people started keeping a second mobile phone (most often an old Nokia handset) just for exchanging texts with their near and dear (cough…cough..) ones.

Airtel - WhatsApp Plans

That era is long gone and forgotten. This is the age of WhatsApp – the cross-platform instant messaging app that claims to have 50 million monthly active users in India. Not surprisingly, telecom operators are leaving no stone unturned to cash-in on the trend, with Bharti Airtel being the latest to offer dedicated WhatsApp Plans.

AirTel, one of India’s largest telecom operators, is now offering special “WhatsApp only” data packs. These WhatsApp Plans will cost between INR 36 to INR 49 (depending on your telecom circle) and offer 200 MB of  “WhatsApp only” data usage on a monthly basis.

To activate the plan, Airtel subscribers simply need to type ‘ WhatsApp’ and send it to 121 . The official Airtel page dedicated for the new WhatsApp tariffs details that the offer is available for both 2G and 3G users.

Airtel - WhatsApp Plans

This is likely to be the fifth such collaboration between WhatsApp and a leading Indian telecom operator. WhatsApp already has similar plans running on services by Tata Docomo, Reliance Communications and Uninor.

Reliance Communications had launched two similar plans back in late 2012, wherein subscribers got unlimited social media access for INR 16 per month, without having to pay any extra data consumption charges.

Uninor, the Indian arm of Norwegian telecom firm Telenor also unveiled similar, unlimited plans in March this year – starting at INR 1 a day to INR 15 a month.

It is only last month that WhatsApp claimed to have crossed the 500 million “monthly active users” mark, with almost a 100 million users added in the last four months alone. India accounts for nearly 10% of WhatsApp users, and with all these data packs and WhatsApp Plans being announced, it looks like its going to be “Yaar mera 10 rupay ka recharge karade” all over again!
