If you’re one that had to be dragged out of the era of Nokia bar phones and flip phones then this story may interest you. LG has released a new flip phone in Korea named the LG Ice Cream Smart Flip. As the name implies, it’s a smart flip phone that has a full range of keys and a touch screen.
Certainly not a high end phone, the Ice Cream Smart Flip is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with a CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz, 1 GB of ram and 8 GB of storage that can be expanded. The top of the flip phone houses a 3.5″ display coming in with a resolution of 320 x 480. To put that in perspective, the first several generations of the iPhone housed the same size display for about 5 years. The battery comes in 1,700 mAh which one would think will last forever with such a small screen and low resolution, thus solving an ongoing problem for smartphone users.
We love the idea of a smart flip phone for several reasons. As reddit user ten24 has pointed out, it has the advantage of built in screen protection, a pleasing hardware activation for answering and ending calls either through button use or closing the phone, the shape is easier to hold to your face, no more butt dialing, and no need for screen timeouts anymore. I’m not going to lie, I definitely miss the sound of snapping a phone shut to end a call but if there’s a screen with a digitizer inside that package, I might have to think twice. No one wants to replace a screen for hundreds of dollars if you get a little overzealous clapping close your clamshell.
The Ice Cream Smart Flip will launch with KitKat. We’re almost disappointed it doesn’t launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Selfie fans, don’t fret. This does feature two cameras for you to snap your pictures on. However, in keeping with the middle of the road hardware choices listed above, the main camera on the back is only 8 MP and for some reason LG chose to only include a VGA camera inside the phone for your Skyping and Snapchat needs. The Ice Cream Smart Flip will also feature all of the radios you would expect with LTE, WiFi and Bluetooth and the Korean specific DMB-TV.
Unfortunately, LG is only releasing the Ice Cream Smart Flip in Korea and aiming it at younger users so if you’re crazy about this (like I am) you’ll have to import it and hope that it works on your carrier’s bands.
