Have you been sitting on your couch wondering why there hasn’t been more technology targeted at women to help them (you?) track their exercise habits and their fitness like a fitness band does, without having to wear the ugly fitness band or giant smartwatch? You’re not alone. The folks at Ear-O-Smart have been feeling the same way and they’re planning on launching their Kickstarter very soon.

What Is Ear-O-Smart?

In short, they’re earrings that will monitor your activity in lieu of wearing a fitness band. Most fitness bands are fairly unobtrusive, but when you start getting into smartwatchs, they tend to be too large for a lot of women’s taste. Obviously smartwatches are getting into a different territory, but they can provide the same type of functionality. Ear-O-Smart poses to be a fashionable accessory that also happens to track your heart rate, calories burned, and your overall activity throughout the day. Here is how they describe it on their website:

Ear-o-smart is introducing a new segment in the wearable electronics market, the first smart earring. By combining fashion and electronics, you can now easily monitor your activity level without compromising your looks.

Ear-o-smart connects to your smartphone with Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology and allows you to monitor a wide range of fitness data such as heart rate, calories, and activity level. The wearable market is expanding quickly, but the problem is that your options are very limited; most fitness monitors are limited to wrist based electronics. Would you want to wear a bulky wrist monitor to a party or on a date? I think not…

We believe that wearable electronics should be embedded into the products we use in our everyday lives; for that reason, we created Ear-o-Smart.Ear-O-Smart

What you don’t realize at first blush is that these aren’t ready to go out of the box earrings. These are basically kits with the chips and posts included, giving you the opportunity to customize your earrings, giving  each user a unique set of smart earrings. They describe it on their un-launched Kickstarter here:

We selected the best design available from our supplier to house the earring but definitely you can create your own designs and use Ear-O-Smart to monitor your body vitals with your personalized design. It would be cool to have different designs matching your dress everyday while keeping the same circuit underneath. We will ship Ear-O-Smart with surgical steel post but if you like to use your own material, it is easy to create custom earring using our 150$ rewards with DIY kit. So go ahead use diamonds or gold but make your earring smart!Ear-O-Smart

As you would expect, Ear-O-Smart will work with both iOS and Android to track your everyday calorie burning and activities. The greatest thing about this project to me is the fact that it is a piece of smart technology but it assimilates into its environment. To someone you’re talking to on the street, there’s no reason for them to suspect that you’re wearing smart earrings. That’s a valuable selling point to me and I hope that the company will consider expanding to other types of accessories, like buttons or cuff links. This kind of out-of-the-box thinking is what Kickstarter was created for, and I’m very excited to see it launch.

Ear-O-Smart won’t be cheap, however, but if you consider the cost of normal earrings they aren’t that bad. The early bird price is $125 CAD, which is approx $111.67 USD. There are only 50 of those available, however. The regular price for a kit will be $150 CAD ($133.99 USD) and then the rewards go up from there with varying costs.

Below they outline their plan for rolling out the product, assuming it gets funded. Basically what this all culminates to is an eventual roll-out of the earrings in Summer of 2015.

Ear-O-Smart Timeline

Originally they planned on the Kickstarter launching this Monday, November 3rd, but now it will be the following Monday, November 10th with a preliminary campaign on BackerClub.co this Monday. Hopefully hiccups before the campaign has even started isn’t a sign for problems in the future, but surely, them wanting to have all of their ducks in a row is a good thing. Keep an eye here and on their website for more information about the launch.
