In January of this year, Statista released a statistic showing the most popular categories in the App Store ranked according to the share of active apps, considering that over 180 billion apps were downloaded from the Apple Store since June of last year.

Topping the list with a whopping 25% were Games, which is quite unsurprising if we had to think about it, then followed Business, Education, and Lifestyle which came in close proximity to each other (8-9%), followed by Entertainment at 6%. The rest were below 5% and included Health & Fitness, Music, Books, and Travel.

Games

At the top of the list, perhaps to nobody’s surprise, is games. Last June, Statista released another survey which showed gaming to be one of the categories that had high mobile user engagement. In fact, it was estimated that 81% of mobile app share of total digital time was spent on gaming apps. It is no wonder that about 23% of all available apps on the App Store fit in this category!

When it comes to selection, it is endless. In fact, the games category on the App Store is one of three that has a drop-down menu from which you can select various genres of games to narrow down your options. There are 18 genres in all which include games of trivia, action, adventure, board, music, sports and simulation. There are also a number of casino and dice games that have increasingly become popular since the introduction of mobile casinos.

According to TomsGuide.com, some of the best games on the App Store according to the genre include: Alto’s Odyssey (action), Monument Valley (puzzle), Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (board game), The Walking Dead: A New Frontier (adventure) and Zynga Poker (casino/dice).

Business

Business Apps can range from e-wallet applications like Paypalf to task and work organization apps like Asana and e-commerce apps like Shopify. Paypal certainly needs no introduction. It’s almost a staple for every consumer buying items off the internet. People like to use to send and receive payments too, and doing all this from your mobile is very convenient.

Work apps like Asana make it really easy for businesses to manage team projects and tasks. With Asana, basically everything that has to do with work, whether it involves individual tasks, team assignments, meetings, and timelines, are all assembled together in an organized fashion.

Every individual knows what they should be doing and why, and when it is due. Each person has tasks assigned to them, with clear details and deadlines. Effectively, Asana tries to reduce the extra and unnecessary work of sending emails and holding meetings, by creating one information hub every employee can tap into, without wasting precious time.

By now we’ve all heard about Shopify, the Canadian e-commerce platform that provides users with everything they need to sell online, on social media, or in person. It has allowed many aspiring entrepreneurs to start their own online business by launching their own Shopify store. Some examples of successful Shopify stores include Ugmonk, Triangl, Taylor Stitch and Marc Wenn.

Although most people would rather manage their online store from their laptops, the mobile app interface is pretty useful and convenient for processing orders, managing and selling products, and following up with customers. This is especially handy for those who are always on the go.

Education

Coming in third, we have education! There are quite a number of different applications that fall into this category, but some of the most downloaded ones are language acquisition apps. Right now, people of all ages are really keen on using their phone to learn a language.

One such example of language acquisition apps is Duolingo. Users can choose from over 30 languages including Japanese, Russian, Swedish, Turkish, Polish, Hebrew, Romanian, and Swahili. The best part is that it’s completely free! It is perhaps debatable whether a language app alone can help someone learn a language from zero, but judging by the many positive reviews, it’s safe to say that the fun element of these apps helps people to remember more.

Two other widely used educational apps are TED and Blinkist. Most of us are probably already familiar with TED Talks or TED Conferences and have probably watched their videos on YouTube. TED is a non-profit organization that runs under the slogan “ideas worth spreading”.

Twice a year, TED holds conferences where thought leaders from all over the world like Sylvia Earle, Julian Treasure, Tim Urban and Sheryl Sandberg, give talks on different topics like science, technology, psychology, culture, and academia.

These talks are then posted online for free distribution so that everyone can have access to this shared knowledge. With the app, this kind of access is made all the more easy; you can explore different playlists according to topic or mood, save and share your favourite talks, and gain access to over 3000 talks.

Not to confuse with audiobooks, Blinkist is a sort of information hub where one can find key insights of 2000+ bestselling nonfiction books into powerful packs you can read or listen to in just 15 minutes. Basically, you can get a summarized version of a book with its key points. Let’s face it, it is impossible for us to read all the books available in our lifetime. This means that we never get to learn about concepts and ideas by some of the greatest minds of all time. With Blinkist we can do this without having to read entire books.

Lifestyle

When it comes to lifestyle, there is quite a variety of apps that fall under this category. However, it seems that interior design apps some of the most popular lifestyle apps available in the App Store.

One of the best and highly-rated ones is Homestyler Interior Design. Unlike other home interior apps where you have to build your room, with this app, you take a photo of your space to turn it into a 3D virtual fitting room, where you can try out all sorts of décor items and furniture!

Moreover, you can also get tips and advice from the community of users using the app. The app has been proved over and over to be highly realistic and accurate. In fact, it boasts a 4.3/5 rating on the App Store.

Of course, then there are lifestyle apps that have to do with dating, and we all know that somewhere on that list is the famous Tinder! Everybody knows about this app; whether we’ve tried it ourselves, or swiped right for a friend while they were at the restroom, or read success stories about people finding each other through Tinder.

Whether it’s seen as the dawn of a dating apocalypse or a quest for love, all we know is that it’s apparently doing what it’s supposed to do, given that it has over 10 million active daily users.

Entertainment

Finally, at number 5 we have entertainment apps because we all love to be entertained! This is where the popular American-based online streaming service, Netflix, comes in. Netflix has become insanely known and used in many countries around the world in recent years, especially due to the “Netflix & Chill” memes that started circulating about three years ago.

However, unbeknownst to many, Netflix has been around for quite some time, since 1997 to be exact. Of course, in those days when the internet was in its infancy, the business started off with DVD sales and rental, later also focusing on DVD rental by mail.

With the big strides that internet was making in the mid-2000s, the company expanded its services online in 2007, introducing streaming media. Since then it has expanded internationally and made its way on our TVs, laptops, tablets, and phones.

Another well-known entertainment app is Imgur. The caption for Imgur is “The Magic of The Internet”, and if you don’t know about it yet, I guarantee you’ll agree with this statement after spending just 5 minutes on the site.
